You may have heard a lot about the uncertainty in the job market nowadays. Between tens of thousands of federal workers being fired to slowing GDP growth, everyone is worried about the state of the economy. This does not bode well for job seekers, especially those trying to find new roles. But there are a few things you can do to help your job search without even searching for a job.
Gain New Skills to Grow Your Career
As the economy is contracting, according to the Atlanta Federal Reserve, now might not be the best time to search for a new role. However, it might be the best time to prepare for a new role. Have you considered going back to school? Maybe a certificate program, or even just a single class? An investment in yourself, if affordable and logistically doable, might be your best option right now.
Technology sectors are particularly hot right now. In all honesty, they are always in demand. Could you learn more about artificial intelligence or systems analysis? Maybe project management is more your speed – whatever the case, pick up a new skill. When the economy and job market are back on the up swing, you will have positioned yourself for success. These are all cycles. Can you break them?
Make New Connections
Okay, not everyone has the interest or ability in returning to school. That is perfectly okay. We all have different paths. But maybe there are connections you can grow while you do your other work. Are there coworkers or supervisors, especially those on other teams that could be good connections to make? While you watch your children play soccer, could you talk to some of the other parents? These connections might not lead you to bigger salaries, houses, and cars. But they can inspire you. Are there complimentary industries in on the bleachers next to you? You will only know if you ask. Maybe you can start a small business together? Maybe they work for your dream company, or know someone who does. Build your connections, don’t burn your bridges. You never know when someone will come across the bridge bearing gifts or dividends.
Volunteer to Grow Your Self (and Your Career)
Remember those soccer games mentioned above? Have you considered participating in them? If you kid plays a sport, does the sport team need another coach? A social media page? Partnerships for new cleats? Well, if you have the capacity, you could always jump in and offer your skills. Yes, you might not be paid for this work. But if you can successfully accomplish a goal while volunteering – hosting a sponsorship event for the local Little League team, for instance, you can easily place that on your resume. It shows initiative, innovation, and problem solving abilities. Plus, you help out our youngest future workers. That’s a win-win.
When there is uncertainty in the air, sometimes thinking outside the box is what will make you a better worker. At the very least, it can prepare you for success when the market takes its inevitable upswing. Take a risk, put yourself out there, learn a new skill, and thrive while you can. Make hay while the sun shines is phrase you’ve heard, right?
